Cover Letters

The covering letter acts as a response and self-introduction to a position for which you are applying.

A cover letter needs to highlight your strengths and identify why you have the ability for the position available. Your cover letter needs to make the employer want to read your resume and arrange an interview. Remember this is your first contact with the potential employer so first impression is of high importance.

Your cover letter needs to be clear and concise whilst being relevant to the advertised position. You must tailor each cover letter to suit the job and there is no need for extraordinary statements. It must not be more than one A4 page in length as you could lose the readers attention.

If you are sending a cover letter by e-mail you want to keep it as concise as possible so people can read the letter on their screen. Generally one or two paragraphs are sufficient for an e-mail cover letter. Always double check you have attached your resume to avoid having to contact the recipient twice.

Key Areas for Cover Letters:

  •  Address the letter correctly. Confirm the recipient’s details and title.
  • Always include your contact details on the letter. These should also be on your resume.
  • Make sure your cover letter is relevant to the position. Focus on your skills and experience that will increase your chances of an interview
  • Make sure the cover letter is no longer than one page and no longer than one or two paragraphs for an e-mail
  • Proof read very carefully
  • Focus on the language, layout and substance of the cover letter
